Alfred DeWitt Obituary

With sadness we the family announce the passing of Alfred DeWitt on May 11, 2021 at the age of 88 years.  Alfred was born on September 14, 1932 to Albert and Clara (Rowat) DeWitt in Gilbert Plains, Manitoba.

As a young boy Alfred was raised south of the tracks, and then later moved to his grandfather’s farm that was across the creek where his mom and dad later built their house.  As a boy Alfred spent a lot of his time on the farm raising chickens, cattle, and pigs.                                                                                                                                        In the 1950’s Alfred ventured to Saskatchewan where he spent two years working on a farm, before coming back to Gilbert Plains and doing road construction, and various jobs for people in the area.  Alfred spent 3 years working in Pine River and Cowan hauling pulp wood, during which time Alfred met his wife Katherine Kanak, and they married in 1958.

Alfred and Katherine had five children, Lloyd, Shelley, Wayne, Donald, and Jason.  Upon marrying, Alfred and Katherine bought a house in town before moving the house to the property beside the cemetery, over time the house was not in any shape to live in, so they bought the house from Trachs and moved it to the same spot by the cemetery, and later they moved to the DeWitt farm where they stayed and raised their family.

In the 1970’s Alfred went to work for Cutforth Bees and later Forrest Trucking for 13 years.  When Alfred finished trucking, he went to work for Ash Apiaries for 13 years.  Alfred loved his Ford trucks, even though he did buy a couple of Chevys nothing could compare to his Ford, and he always went back to his Ford.

Alfred is predeceased by his wife Katherine, parents Albert and Clara, his son Donald, and brothers John, Clark, Mel, Goldie, and Kenny.

Alfred is survived by his children Lloyd, Shelley, Wayne and Jason, sisters Rosamay, and Yvonne, 6 grandchildren, numerous great – grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

A funeral service was held on Friday, May 14, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. from the Pathways Funeral Services Tribute Room, and was officiated by Reverend Father Brent Kuzyk.  Interment took place in the Eldon Cemetery, in Gilbert Plains, Manitoba.
