Dmetro Stan Obituary

It is with great sorrow, sadness and much love that we announce the peaceful passing of Metro Stan on December 8, 2024, at his home in Dauphin MB, with family at his bedside.

Metro was born to Alexander (Alex) Stan and Claudia (nee Boczulak) November 6, 1937, on the family farm, where he grew up, outside of Foam Lake Saskatchewan.

He would have wanted us to celebrate his life, not his ‘Passing’.

After graduating high school, Metro moved to Winnipeg and worked for the Railroad. In 1959 Metro took a Job with Manitoba Telephone System (MTS) construction/overhead linesman and moved to Brandon, MB. After a couple of years Metro transferred to MTS central office where he excelled.  In 1961 he met the love of his life “Schweeder,” Eileen. They were married in 1962 and started a family. In 1967, with three toddlers in tow, Metro and Eileen Moved to Thompson MB, where Metro was tasked with helping set up Thompson and surrounding area with MTS Telephone transmission. In 1973 Metro was transferred to Dauphin MB, MTS Central Office, where he became an MTS shop steward. After 33 years as a dedicated and devoted employee with only one sick day during his tenure, Metro retired from MTS in 1992.

Metro was very proud of his Ukrainian heritage and loved Ukrainian music and dance. He and his Schweeder, “Eileen” would travel to other local community dinners and dances, Metro loved the Ukrainian polka’s the most. Ukrainian Festival was always a favorite, he looked forward to and attended faithfully since 1973. Metro loved all the activities, especially the street dances. He faithfully volunteered by assisting with placement of signage, collected camping fees and provided security services. Metro was also a devoted attendee of The Ukrainian Catholic Church of Resurrection in Dauphin where he attended Sunday Mass when home in Dauphin.

Metro was very community and youth orientated and donated a lot of time to community sports and activities. He strongly believed that youth are our future!

1964 and 1965 he coached youth Hockey at Brandon Community Center. Metro was very active in sports and activities of his three sons. In 1968 he introduced Cubs Canada to Thompson MB youth and was the “Akela” until 1972. From 1968 to 1973 Metro coached Thompson youth baseball and Hockey.  He Coached youth baseball in Dauphin for many years after he moved to Dauphin in 1973. In 1974 Metro was very instrumental in Bringing Minor Hockey to Dauphin and was the president of Parkland Minor Hockey and Coached hockey for many years. He even coached the Pride of Dauphin, NHL’s coach for the Nashville Predators.

Metro Loved Baseball!

“For the Love of Baseball,” Metro played fastball for Brandon’s MTS construction crew and Brandon Spartan Athletics between 1959 and 1967.

After Metro’s retirement, “For the Love of Baseball,” he played Manitoba Seniors Slow Pitch for various teams through Manitoba for 32 seasons. Metro wintered and played Seniors Softball in Florida for 29 seasons. “For The Love of Baseball!” and as morbid as it may sound, it would have been more fitting for Metro to have dropped running bases.

In Metro’s early retirement, when not playing Baseball, he really enjoyed camping and fishing with his Schweeder and Granddaughter Courtney, cementing camping and fishing as core memories for Courtney to pass along to her two sons - the next generation. He maintained busyness in retirement by continuing to support and admire the growth of his grandchildren, into their adulthood. He was proud to become a great-grandfather to Logan and Jacob. He maintained his active role as a great-grandparent until late in his life - the next generation of boys thought he was the strongest man ever and held onto his wise words when he would teach them things, play soccer, or build a fire to roast a hot dog with them.

Metro took great pride in his yard and was a meticulous green thumb, during the summer, when not playing Baseball, you would most likely find him somewhere puttering in his yard. He could manage to grow unlikely and unexpected fruit, vegetables and plants in Manitoba’s severe climate. From seeds he grew a producing orange tree, Kiwi’s, apricots and peanuts to name a few. I think he liked to brag about what he could grow - despite the odds. One summer he grew 50 different varieties of tomatoes! Metro also grew multiple varieties of grapes and made some of the best and some of the WORST tasting wines.

Metro loved to drive and see the country with his Schweeder. Every anniversary was a well thought out adventure, they would take a 3–4-day drive to a part of the country they had never been to. For example, two years ago they took a drive to Alberta and went horseback riding. This past summer they drove to Oliver BC.

Metro really enjoyed getting together with family, friends and neighbors to play cards and socialize.  He also looked forward to his weekly gatherings with other old cronies of Dauphin for coffee at McDonald’s.

Metro is survived by his Wife of 62 years, Eileen (Rudniski) Stan of Dauphin MB. Son; Barry stan and wife Glenda of Asheville MB. Son; Terry Stan of Gallager Lake, BC.
