Evelyn Murray Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Evelyn Murray (Choma) with family by her side on Friday, November 10, 2023, at the age of 68 years.

Evelyn was born to John and Stella Choma on June 15, 1955 in Gilbert Plains.  Evelyn was one of three girls, sisters Shirley and Debbie.  They helped on the farm feeding livestock, picking stones and roots.  Evelyn attended Sulfur Creek School, and then Gilbert Plains.

Evelyn first met Billy when she was 15 and Billy was turning 17, when she asked Billy to go to the Drive In with her sister Shirley and her friend.  They spent 5 years together before being married.  In 1973 they moved to Thompson where Evelyn worked in medical records in the Thompson Hospital. In 1974 they  moved to Winnipeg where she worked for Richardson Securities Building.  Evelyn and Billy were married in Dauphin, Manitoba on August 9, 1975 and returned to Gilbert Plains that fall.  Evelyn worked for Intermountain School Division, and then Gilbert Plains Credit Union, where she spent 35 years.  In 1980 Bill and Evelyn went farming with Evelyn’s father until 2019.

In 1978, they had their first addition to the family, Daughter Jami Dawn Murray (Turetsky), and then in 1985 their second daughter Jenell Lee Murray (Todoruk).  Evelyn’s love for the girls was over the top, she tried to guide them in life, giving them advice and they usually listened to her.  One piece of advice was what ever you do, don’t marry a dam farmer.  They both married farmers.  She loved both of her sons-in-law Jason, and Darcy, and she believed they are the perfect men.  Evelyn’s life was fulfilled with the arrival of the Grand Children Riley, Alix, and Grady Turetsky, and Evalee, and Holden Todoruk.  Evelyn was on the road steady babysitting, and attending all of their functions.  They were her world.

Evelyn was a very kind, and soft hearted woman, always ready to listen and share problems people had.  She could meet strangers and within minutes know their history.  She loved people no matter what and enjoyed having fun with all of you.  Evelyn loved camping, fishing, riding the water tube with the kids, and campfires at Blue Lake for years.  Evelyn should have been a home interior decorating, and landscaping designer, she loved it.  Evelyn enjoyed being a member of the hope club, along came The Babas and that was the highlight of her life, being “crazy” with the girls.  Thank you for that.  Evelyn also had a love for curling.

Evelyn had tough times in her life losing her mother Stella at 66, her dad John at 80, sister-in-law Debbie at 55, brother-in-law Phillip at 68.  Evelyn battled Polymyalgia for the last 5 years, when the cancer came Evelyn kept fighting, and would not slow down, I’ve never seen a person so strong to go through what she did.  Evelyn is survived by her Husband of 48 years Billy Murray, her daughters Jami Turetsky (Jason), Jenell Todoruk (Darcy), her grandchildren, Riley, Alix & Grady Turetsky, Evalee & Holden Todoruk.  Sister Shirley Fillion, and brother-in-law Rockey (Adrian), as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.
