Helen Skomorowski Obituary

Helen Marlene Skomorowski of Winnipeg, Manitoba passed away on Saturday March 28, 2026, at 10:45 at the Grace Hospital at the age of 71 years.

Helen was born on June 17, 1954, in Grandview Municipality. She was the second child, after Charlie, to Harry and Marion Skomorowski.

Helen received her early education at three different country schools: Ottawa, Hollybourne and Halton and later went to Grandview Collegiate where she graduated in 1972. She then decided to move to Winnipeg to continue her education to become a nurse. Helen graduated in 1974 from Misericordia and began a lifelong career in the operating room, where she truly found her calling. She worked as a nurse for 27 years! She especially loved her years working at the Children’s Hospital, caring deeply for her young patients and colleagues alike.  Though she never quite warmed to the politics that crept in toward the end of her career, she remained dedicated to her work until happily retiring at the age of 53.

In her retirement, adventure took hold and she enjoyed travelling the world with friends, by herself or with tour groups. Her travels took her all over the world: Italy, Ukraine, China, Madagascar, Tanzania, Kenya, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador, Easter Island and Churchill.

One of the greatest joys of Helen’s life was the birth of her granddaughter, Grace, in 2013. Grace gave her a second wind and a renewed sense of purpose. Helen delighted in every moment spent with her — keeping her on her toes, sharing laughter, and proudly watching her grow. Now we know why Baba lived to 100 as she raised Helen’s daughter Georgi in Dauphin. Helen also enjoyed spending time and helping to look after her “fur baby” Rocco.

Helen faced life’s challenges with grit and humour. With multiple orthopedic surgeries over the years, she often joked that she was practically bionic — “don’t put a magnet near her.” After a breast cancer diagnosis at the age of 63, and later a diagnosis of lung cancer in September 2024, she continued to show remarkable strength. She was a relentless advocate and a strong fighter who chose to keep her cancer diagnosis private to continue living each day on her own terms rather than being defined by her illness.

Helen knew she wanted to be cremated but she did not want her final resting place to be in Winnipeg. She later discovered the columbarium in Grandview, which she felt was absolutely perfect. Now sister, brother and sister-in-law will all be together again on the same level of their “condominium.” It feels like a full circle: born in Grandview and now laid to rest in Grandview.

Helen will be remembered for her resilience, her sharp wit, her dedication to caring for others, and her deep love for her family.

Helen was predeceased by her mother Marion 2021, father Harry 1989, brother Charlie 2017 and sister-in-law Ricki 2024.

She is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Georgi; her son-in-law, Deji; her cherished granddaughter, Grace; and her beloved “fur baby,” Rocco. She is also survived by her four nephews: Fraser (Tina), Aaron (Marcy), Warren (Rhea), and Tyson (Vickie), as well as ten great-nieces and great-nephews: Zackery (Shannon), Rebecca, Emily, Teah, Keelah, Brix, Domonik, Max, Teagan, and Larisa.
