It is with much sadness that the Love family announces the passing of Larry Love on September 3, 2025, at the age of 88. Larry broke his hip during a fall in July 2025 and was not able to recover.
Left to cherish his memory are his son Ron Love and daughter-in-law Shelly, daughter Nancy Love and son-in-law Brian Lee, grandson Riley Love and wife Janelle and children Éloise and Bodie, and grandson Luke Love and wife Erin Roloff and son Theo. Larry is also survived by his brothers Les Love and Leith Love, and many nephews and nieces.
Larry was predeceased by his wife Joyce, sister Arleigh Kumitch, and granddaughter Kyla Love.
Larry was born in The Pas on July 13, 1937, to Ernie and Iris Love. He was the second oldest of four children, with older sister Arleigh and younger brothers Leith and Les. Dauphin was Ernie’s hometown and the family moved to Dauphin when Larry was a young boy. Larry lived in Dauphin for most of his life.
Larry met Joyce in school in Dauphin, and they were married on October 17, 1959. They lived in Winnipeg for a short while, where Larry worked for Wawanesa Insurance. Larry’s dad Ernie had established Love Insurance Agency in Dauphin in 1956 and when Ernie became ill in 1960, Larry and Joyce moved back to Dauphin and Larry took over the business. After Larry’s father died in 1961 and his mother died in 1962, Larry’s younger brothers came to live with them. Larry entered into a business partnership with Don Persson in 1965, creating Love & Persson Agencies.
Larry and Joyce had two children, Ron and Nancy, whom they raised in Dauphin. The family spent most of the summers at the cottage at Crescent Cove on Lake Dauphin and took camping trips with their tent trailer. In the winters, Larry enjoyed snowmobiling with his family and friends as well as cross-country skiing on the trails at the north end of Riding Mountain National Park.
Larry was involved in supporting minor hockey in Dauphin and he coached for several years when Ron was playing. He also volunteered his time serving as a league convenor. Larry enjoyed playing hockey for many years in the noon hour hockey league.
Music was an important part of Larry’s life. He played the saxophone in his youth, but singing was his passion. He was a charter member of the Barbershoppers and sang in the chorus and in quartets. The annual Barbershoppers’ concert at the Watson Arts Centre was a family event as Joyce helped organize the Afterglow party and Larry recruited his kids and then grandsons to take tickets at the door and hand out the programs to audience members. Larry loved listening to music and had an extensive music collection.
Larry was an active member of the Dauphin community. He was a charter and longstanding member of the Dauphin Lion’s Club. Larry also served on the board of the Dauphin First United Church and he and Joyce volunteered at the church for many years. He was on the committee involved in the planning and development of Lorray Manor.
Larry retired in 1993, and he and Joyce were able to spend more time at the cottage and in Mazatlan. He also had more time to volunteer, and he worked with others to develop the Dauphin & District Community Foundation. He understood the value that this could bring to the community and jumped in with wholehearted enthusiasm. Larry and Joyce enjoyed swimming at the pool and established a fund for its maintenance through the Foundation.
Larry loved being a grandpa to Riley and Luke and he could often be found at the rink tying skates in the locker room and cheering from the stands, as well as watching their other activities. He was thrilled to become a great-grandpa to Éloise, Bodie and Theo and he cherished spending time with them at family get-togethers. Larry was immensely proud to have his son Ron and grandsons Riley and Luke as the third and fourth generation of Loves to continue the family business.
Larry moved into Lorray Manor in August 2023, after Joyce’s passing. He enjoyed his view of Riding Mountain from his recliner in the living room there.
The Love family wishes to extend their gratitude to Sharon Zieler for her support to Dad that she provided with kindness, compassion and sense of humour, which Dad always enjoyed.
We would also like to thank Dr. Mike Penrose for his exceptional care of Dad over many years. Our family also wishes to thank Dr. Leo Lopez-Gardner, physician assistant Mackenzie and hospital staff for their care this past month.
The family is also grateful to the staff of Lorray Manor for the kindness and support they gave to Larry over the past two years.
In keeping with Larry's wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held at a later date.
