Peter Sorochynski Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Peter Nicholas Sorochynski (Pistol Pete) 74 of Dauphin, Manitoba, Friday, August 1, 2025, after a brief illness with cancer.

Peter was born September 27, 1950, in Shoal Lake, Manitoba to parents Nicholas and Carrie Sorochynski (nee Sichewski).  He grew up on the family farm, graduating grade 12 from Shoal Lake Collegiate.

Moving to Winnipeg he accepted a position with Manitoba Dairy and Poultry Co-Op earning several promotions culminating in a transfer to Dauphin’s cheese plant in 1974, becoming Plant Superintendent.  With a brief sojourn in Rossburn as Cheese Plant Manager in 1981, Peter returned to Dauphin to continue his career with Manco becoming the Plant Manager in 1996.  The cheese operation was transferred to Winkler in 1998 but after 30 years Peter chose to remain in Dauphin.  Peter went on to work as a city driver with Purolator Couriers until his retirement in 2010.

Peter married Deborah (Debby) Rowes on August 30, 1974.  They raised 2 children; Shanan Kathleen and Daniel Johnathon.

Peter loved farming, fishing, hunting, basketball, golf, playing cribbage, attending auctions, re-finishing furniture, gardening, and making his legacy dill pickles and borscht to share with family and friends.

Peter supported Debby’s passion for dogs, rehoming 11 in past years.

In the early years Peter found many ways to contribute to his community, serving as a church board member, Scouts Canada leader for Beavers & Cubs, served as president of Tinkerbell Daycare Centre, Chairperson for Smith Jackson School Board; Member Parents for Ukrainian Education, Assistant Coordinator for the National Scout Jamboree held in Dauphin in 1994.  Throughout his life he was active in national politics, loved his time with the Dauphin Senior Men’s Golf Group; Dauphin Fish and Wildlife Association and supporting the Parkland Humane Society.

Peter’s life was a testament to hard work, dedication to community and love of family.

Peter was predeceased by his father Nicholas; brother Ted, twin brother Paul and Mother Caroline.

Leaving to mourn him is his wife of 51 years Debby; daughter Shanan (Andy) Gibson of London, England and son Daniel (Carman) Sorochynski of Winnipeg, Manitoba; grandchildren Drew & Ethan Sorochynski and Henry Gibson; Grampa John Schur of Winnipeg and Auntie Sonia Coombs of Dauphin.  As well as many extended family and close friends.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Van Otterloo for his compassionate care and support during Peter’s illness along with the wonderful staff at the palliative care unit at the Dauphin Hospital.

Should friends so desire, donations in Peter’s memory may be made to the Parkland Humane Society or to Cancer Care Manitoba.

A Celebration of Peter’s life will be held on Saturday, August 30th, at 11:00 A.M. from Mountain View Christian Assembly, with Pastor Scott Allen officiating.  Interment will follow in the Dauphin Riverside Cemetery.
