Tony O'Connell

Anthony “Tony” Joseph O’Connell of Gilbert Plains, Manitoba, passed away on Monday, December 2, 2024, at the age of 72 years.

Tony was born in North Sydney Nova Scotia on February 28, 1952, to parents Joseph and Dorothy O’Connell, he was the oldest of 10 children.  Tony went to school in North Sydney where he met his wife, Dora.  They dated for four years and on Tony’s 18th birthday he bought his then girlfriend a diamond ring.  Six months later Tony and Dora were married on August 1, 1970.

He had several jobs in the first 6 years but when the hiring came up for the mines out west, he jumped at the chance.  On July 13 he left home to start his lifelong career with INCO.  Tony spent over 30 years with INCO and went from being a labourer to a shift boss, his crew became his second family.  He loved his job and missed Thompson but also accepted the fact it was time to leave and start our retirement.

During his time in Thompson, he also studied and received his certificate in forestry and law.  He spent every summer at paint lake traveling to and from whenever he could.  He loved fishing, hunting and spending time with his   children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Tony is survived by his wife of 54 years Dora, and 3 sons, Anthony (Bridgette), Glenn (Tammi) and Trevor (Alana), grandchildren Cole (Gillian), Brady, Sydney and Liam, great grandson Kevin as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Tony was predeceased by both of his parents and his sister Jackie in 2023.  Tony also lost his constant companion of 15 years C.J. who left us on Mother’s Day in 2023.

A Memorial Service was held for Tony on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, at 11:00 A.M. from St. Paul's United Church, 22 Minto Ave. Gilbert Plains, MB.  Reverend Luckson Mariba officiated.

A light lunch followed at the Gilbert Plains Legion.
