William McCallum Obituary

William (Bill) Alexander McCallum of Dauphin, MB passed away peacefully at the age of 77 on Monday, July 15th, 2024, at the Dauphin Regional Health Centre.

Bill was born on February 21, 1947, in Dauphin, MB to Cleveland and Steina McCallum.  He grew up in Dauphin and remained there his whole life.  He graduated High School in 1966 from DCTI and went on to his post-secondary studies in teaching at the University of Brandon.  Many summers were spent in Brandon as he finished his Education Degree.  He was very proud to be a teacher and was actively involved in his union and became MTS president for his Association, a role that he enjoyed and took very seriously.

Bill loved to drive around. Many family road trips were taken to see family and friends.  He especially liked to spend time helping his uncles on the farm in Melita for harvest during his summers off.  He never missed an opportunity to stop off and take us to a small-town museum, zoo, or just pop in for a visit to catch up with family members or friends.

When he was actively teaching, he mainly taught at the Mackenzie Junior High School.  After teaching, he passed his time driving around town, stopping to have coffee and of course a piece of pie at local diners, travelling on bus tours and attending many of his son’s hockey games across North America.  He was a lifelong learner and loved to read and watch the news and sports.  Not a day went by that he didn’t read his favourite newspapers - Brandon Sun, Winnipeg Free Press and the Dauphin Herald.

Bill was many things to many people. He enjoyed the visits he had with his grandkids and always had a treat or a story to share with them. He usually had lots of questions about their daily lives and schooling. He had many obstacles in his lifetime but showed resiliency, strength and had strong independent skills. He believed in the importance of manners and proper grammar. He had strong opinions and wasn’t afraid to share them or correct you if you were wrong. He was very proud of his upbringing and a dollar always meant something to him.

He is survived by his four children and their mother, Gloria McCallum (Toews).

Three daughters, Wendy (Lance), Tammy (David), Joanne (Gildas) and his only son Scott (Lindsay) and grandchildren Blaire, Taylor, Cole, Lily, Josie, Cash, Nolan, Clara, Londyn, Lainey and Charlette.  He is also survived by his brother Murdie (Debbie), sister Patsy and many cousins and nieces and nephews.

The family would like to genuinely thank the doctors and staff at the St. Paul’s Personal Care Home and the Dauphin Regional Health Centre for their exceptional care, kindness and compassion during Bill’s needed time there.

In lieu of flowers, or if so desired, donations to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 20 in Dauphin would be appreciated.  A private funeral will be had by immediate family only at Pathways Funeral Home.

Should friends so desire, donations in William's memory may be made to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 20
