Alice McQueen Obituary

It is with heavy hearts and sadness that we announce the passing of our mother Alice May McQueen. Alice passed away peacefully at the Grandview Personal Care Home at the age of 98, surrounded by her loving family.

Alice was born on November 16,1925 in Grandview Manitoba, the second child of seven born to John (Jack) and Beatrice Peters. When Alice was just ten years old her mother passed away. She and her siblings were fostered by their neighbours and relatives in the Grandview/Gilbert Plains area. Despite the scattering, they managed to maintain a strong family relationship throughout their lives. She attended Plainview, Valley River, Gilbert Plains, Brickburn, and Tamarisk Schools. After completing Grade 10, she became a switchboard operator in Gilbert Plains.

Alice married Elwood McQueen on October 22,1947 and they made their living by farming northeast of Grandview for 32 years. They retired to Grandview in 1979. With the exception of residing in Dauphin at Lorray Manor for 2 years, Alice lived in Grandview her entire life. She was predeceased by her husband Elwood in 1994, her half-sister Ethel Robson, sisters  Annie Keats, Lena (Lily) Hale, Ruth Dykun and brother Fred Peters. Also her brothers-in-law Gordon Keats, Bill Hale, Noel Feetham, Abe Friesen and sister-in-law Miriam Peters.

Left to mourn are her 3 children and 9 grandchildren: Trudy Steiner (Jim) of Dauphin and their children Carla Wolfenden (Chris), Jamie Steiner (Dale), Tyler Steiner (Nilda), Kerry Steiner (Rachel) and Courtney Steiner (Tiff); Blake McQueen (Linda) of Saskatoon and their children Sean McQueen and Erin McCormick (Chad); Rodger McQueen (Marla) of Dauphin and their sons Jared McQueen (Olivia)  and Trent McQueen (Amber).   She is also survived by 12 great grandchildren, sisters Ruby Feetham and Betty Friesen, brother-in-law Joe Dykun as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Alice had a very active life and was known for her speed walking pace. She played softball, bowled, curled and square danced. Her hobbies were sewing, knitting, crocheting, quilting, gardening, cake decorating, coin collecting, puzzles, reading, and later she became competent on her computer. Alice and Elwood travelled to many locations in North America and Europe, as well as countless camping trips with the family to Blue Lake and other beautiful spots in the area. She also loved to drive and the freedom that it brought her to be able to take herself wherever she wanted to go.

Alice was a great cook, especially known for her pies for which she won many prizes at the local fairs.   She was also community minded - active in the Grandview UCW#5 and the Dawn of Peace Rebecca Lodge for many years. We will miss her love, hard work, wisdom and laughter. Alice was a truly wonderful person.

A special thank you to the staff at Lorray Manor and the Grandview Personal Care Home for their loving care of our special family member. A celebration of Alice’s life will be held in the summer 2024. In lieu of flowers, donations in Alice’s memory may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Manitoba.
